Your workplace is considered to be your second home. After all, you spend almost one-third of your day in it, which is usually half of your waking hours. More often than not, it is in your workplace where your physical and mental capabilities are stimulated.
Unfortunately, for a few individuals, sometimes the workplace also becomes a hostile ground, primarily due to the workplace violence inflicted on them.
Definition and signs
Generally, workplace violence occurs when an employer or a co-employee inflict any form of violence to an employee. More specifically, it happens when the safety, well-being, or health of a member of a particular workforce is threatened, assaulted, or abused in circumstances relating to his or her work.
This violence may root from industrial disputes, although sometimes they may root from personal disputes. Any form of violence can be considered as workplace violence, but specifically, they can be categorized into three.
First, they can be non-physical, such as verbal abuse or threats, and intimidations, among others. Next, they can be physical, such as pushing, punching, and kicking, among others. And lastly, they can be aggravated, such as when the assaulter utilizes actual weapons such as knives or other things that can be used as a weapon, which can include bottles, pens, or sharp objects.
